Bethany Dempsey, B.A., BSW, MSW, & RSW (With Clinical Specialty)

As a registered social worker, therapist, and clinical specialist, I bring more than 20 years of experience in healthcare and mental health. I work with youth and adults of all ages and genders, and I care deeply about creating a space where you can feel safe, welcomed, heard, and respected—just as you are.

My clinical specialist designation reflects advanced clinical knowledge and experience in psychosocial assessment and in supporting people with complex mental health concerns. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to learning, growing, and providing thoughtful, evidence-informed care grounded in best practice.

Sometimes the most helpful place to begin is with someone who will listen without judgment, help you make sense of what you are carrying, and support you as you find your way forward.

I see therapy as a collaborative relationship built on trust, respect, and openness. You are the expert on your own life, and my role is to bring clinical experience, knowledge, and practical therapeutic tools to our work together. At your pace, we can explore what you have been through, recognize the strengths that have helped you get here, and work toward the changes that matter most to you.

My approach is trauma-informed, strengths-focused, and individualized. I recognize that many coping patterns develop for good reasons, often in response to difficult or overwhelming life experiences. In therapy, we can look at those patterns with curiosity, compassion, and care rather than judgment.

I support clients with a range of concerns, including:

  • Trauma and PTSD, including military, veteran, first-responder, and sexual-assault-related trauma

  • Childhood trauma

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Grief and loss

  • Addictions

  • Chronic pain and health concerns

  • Anger and emotional regulation

  • Parenting and relationship concerns

  • Stress, burnout, and life transitions

  • Divorce and separation

  • Career and school transitions

  • Illness, loss, and other significant changes in life

I am an LGBTQ2S+ ally and am committed to offering an inclusive, affirming therapeutic environment where every client is treated with dignity and respect.

My clinical experience includes specialized training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Brief Solution-Focused Therapy, and trauma-informed practices, including EMDR and CPT. I draw from these approaches in a flexible way, using a strengths-based and anti-oppressive lens to support care that fits each person’s needs.

I earned a Bachelor Degree of Psychology in 1997, a Bachelor of Social Work in 2002, and a Master of Social Work in 2014, all from Dalhousie University. I am licensed with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW) and am a member of the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW).

You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. Beginning therapy can feel like a big step, and it is okay to start exactly where you are. My hope is to offer a steady, supportive space where you can speak honestly, feel less alone in what you are carrying, and build the tools and confidence to move forward.

Services are covered by most extended health and medical insurance plans. Clients are encouraged to confirm their individual coverage directly with their insurance provider.
